Bagan, in Myanmar, is one of the world’s most extraordinary archaeological landscapes, with over 2,500 temples scattered across a vast plain.
The journey was disrupted by an earthquake.
Communications were down, visitors gone. Each evening, I searched for the right light.Often, the sky remained muted, softened by clouds and the haze of the dry season. Then, one evening, everything aligned.
A break in the clouds allowed the light to filter through dust, heat, and distant fires.
The temples were bathed in gold.
Bagan came to life exactly as I had imagined it, a dreamlike landscape beyond time.
