Broken-Chamonix-French Alps I Black and white fine art photography
When the shadow of the mountains is cast upon the clouds, the Brocken spectre appears — a relatively rare meteorological phenomenon formed by the scattering of light through the droplets that make up the mist. Here, the spectre is shaped by the Aiguilles of Chamonix.
This apparition, once at the origin of superstitions and beliefs in supernatural phenomena, inspired a poetic account by Charles Baudelaire in Artificial Paradises:
“You now know that the apparition is nothing but your own reflection, and that by addressing the phantom with the expression of your secret feelings, you make it the symbolic mirror in which, in the clarity of daylight, is reflected what would otherwise remain hidden forever.”
